Materials You'll Need:

- 1x4 lumber (4 pieces, 8 feet long)
- 1x12 lumber (2 pieces, 8 feet long)
- Upholstery foam (2 inches thick, 54" x 75")
- Upholstery fabric (5 yards)
- Mattress (full or queen size)
- Hinges (2 pairs, 18-inch)
- Gas piston lift system (2 units, 100 lbs. capacity)
- Screws (2-inch, 1-1/2-inch, 1-inch)
- Wood glue

Step 1: Build the Frame

Start by assembling the bed frame. Cut the 2x4 lumber into the following lengths: 2 pieces at 72 inches, 2 pieces at 60 inches, and 4 pieces at 36 inches. Connect the 72-inch pieces to the 60-inch pieces with 2-inch screws to form the headboard and footboard. Then, attach the 36-inch pieces to the inside of the headboard and footboard to create the side rails.

Step 2: Create the Platform

Cut the 3/4-inch plywood to 54 inches wide by 75 inches long for the bed platform. Secure it to the side rails using 1-1/2-inch screws.

Step 3: Build the Couch Frame

Cut the 2x4 lumber into the following lengths for the couch frame: 2 pieces at 72 inches, 2 pieces at 24 inches, and 4 pieces at 18 inches. Assemble the frame similar to the bed frame, connecting the longer pieces with the shorter pieces to form the seat and back.

Step 4: Create the Seat Cushions

Cut the 1/2-inch plywood to 24 inches wide by 72 inches long for the seat cushion base. Cover it with upholstery foam and fabric, securing it with staples or glue.

Step 5: Create the Back Cushions

Cut the 1/2-inch plywood to 18 inches wide by 72 inches long for each back cushion base. Cover them with upholstery foam and fabric as well.

Step 6: Attach the Cushions

Position the seat cushion on the couch frame and secure it with screws or bolts. Hinge the back cushions to the top of the couch frame using 18-inch hinges.

Step 7: Install the Murphy Bed Mechanism

Cut the 1x12 lumber into two pieces that are 8 feet long. These will be the support beams for the Murphy bed. Attach one beam to the top of the headboard and the other to the top of the footboard using 2-inch screws.

Install the gas piston lift system by following the manufacturer's instructions. One unit will be attached to each side of the Murphy bed. This system will assist in lifting and lowering the bed.

Step 8: Attach the Mattress

Place the mattress on the bed platform and secure it with straps or Velcro.

Step 9: Finish the Couch

You can customize the couch to your liking by adding pillows, throws, or artwork. Consider staining or painting the couch to match your decor.
