How To Replace Foam In Couch Cushions

Sofa cushions experience wear and tear over time, losing their shape and comfort. Replacing the foam inside can restore their support and extend their lifespan. Follow these steps for a successful foam replacement project.

1. Assess the Cushions

Examine the cushions to determine the extent of damage. If the foam is severely deteriorated, you may need to replace the entire cushion. If only a section is damaged, you can cut out and replace that part.

2. Gather Materials

You will need the following materials:

  • New foam (same density and firmness as the original)
  • Sharp knife or electric carving knife
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Upholstery adhesive (optional)

3. Remove Old Foam

Unzip or remove the cushion cover to expose the foam. Use a sharp knife or electric carving knife to carefully cut around the perimeter of the foam, separating it from the fabric. If the foam is glued to the fabric, gently pry it loose.

4. Measure and Cut New Foam

Measure the dimensions of the old foam and transfer them to the new foam. Use a sharp knife or electric carving knife to cut the new foam to the exact size. Ensure a snug fit by cutting the new foam slightly smaller than the original.

5. Insert New Foam

Place the new foam inside the cushion cover. If desired, apply a thin layer of upholstery adhesive to the edges of the foam to hold it in place. Press the foam firmly into the cover to ensure a secure fit.

6. Reattach Cushion Cover

Align the cushion cover over the foam and zip or button it back into place. Smooth out any wrinkles or creases. Your newly revitalized cushion is now ready for use.
