How To Make Couch Covers

A couch cover is a great way to protect your furniture from dirt, spills, and wear and tear. It can also give your couch a new look, and it's a relatively inexpensive way to update your living room decor. Best of all, you can make your couch cover in just a few hours with a few simple materials.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Fabric (amount will vary depending on the size of your couch)
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Elastic cord or ribbon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Measure your couch. To determine how much fabric you need, measure the length, width, and height of your couch. Add 6 inches to each measurement for overlap and hemming.
  2. Cut the fabric. Cut two pieces of fabric to the desired size. If your couch has cushions, you can make separate covers for each cushion.
  3. Sew the sides and bottom. With right sides together, sew the sides and bottom of the fabric pieces, leaving a 6-inch opening in the back for turning.
  4. Turn the cover right side out. Reach into the opening in the back of the cover and turn it right side out. Press the seams.
  5. Hem the opening. Fold the raw edges of the opening inward by 1 inch and press. Fold again by 1 inch and press. Sew the hem in place.
  6. Add elastic cord or ribbon (optional). If you want to keep the cover in place, you can add elastic cord or ribbon around the bottom edge. To do this, thread the elastic cord or ribbon through the casing you created when you sewed the sides and bottom. Secure the ends of the elastic cord or ribbon by sewing them together.
  7. Put the cover on your couch. Place the cover over your couch and adjust it until it fits snugly. If you're using elastic cord or ribbon, tie the ends together to secure the cover in place.

Tips:

  • Choose a fabric that is durable and easy to care for. Canvas, denim, and twill are all good options.
  • If you're not sure how much fabric to buy, it's always better to err on the side of caution and buy too much rather than too little.
  • If your couch has a lot of curves or angles, you may need to make a pattern before you cut the fabric. You can do this by tracing the outline of your couch onto paper.
  • If you don't have a sewing machine, you can hand-sew your couch cover. Just be sure to use a strong thread and take your time.
  • Couch covers can be machine-washed and dried. However, it's important to check the care label on the fabric before washing.
