How To Build An Outdoor Couch

Building an outdoor couch is a great way to add extra seating to your patio or backyard. It's a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to build an outdoor couch:

Materials:

  • 2x4s (for the frame)
  • 2x6s (for the seat and back)
  • 1x4s (for the armrests)
  • 1/2-inch plywood (for the seat and back)
  • 3-inch wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Stain or paint (optional)
  • Cushions (optional)

Tools:

  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Sander
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Clamps

Step 1: Cut the frame

Cut the 2x4s to the following lengths:

  • 4 pieces at 36 inches long
  • 2 pieces at 72 inches long

Assemble the frame by screwing the 2x4s together in a rectangle, with the 72-inch pieces forming the long sides and the 36-inch pieces forming the short sides. Make sure the frame is square by measuring the diagonals and making sure they are equal.

Step 2: Add the seat supports

Cut the 2x6s to the following lengths:

  • 3 pieces at 72 inches long

Screw the 2x6s to the inside of the frame, parallel to the short sides. Space the supports evenly apart, about 16 inches on center.

Step 3: Attach the seat

Cut the plywood to fit the top of the seat supports. Place the plywood on top of the supports and screw it down. Make sure the plywood is flush with the top of the frame.

Step 4: Add the back supports

Cut the 2x4s to the following lengths:

  • 2 pieces at 30 inches long
  • 1 piece at 72 inches long

Screw the 30-inch pieces to the inside of the frame, parallel to the long sides and about 12 inches from the back. Screw the 72-inch piece to the top of the 30-inch pieces, connecting them.

Step 5: Attach the back

Cut the plywood to fit the back of the couch. Place the plywood on top of the back supports and screw it down. Make sure the plywood is flush with the top of the frame.

Step 6: Add the armrests

Cut the 1x4s to the following lengths:

  • 2 pieces at 24 inches long
  • 2 pieces at 18 inches long

Screw the 24-inch pieces to the front of the couch, about 6 inches from the ends. Screw the 18-inch pieces to the ends of the couch, perpendicular to the 24-inch pieces.

Step 7: Sand and finish

Sand the couch to smooth out any rough edges. You can then stain or paint the couch, or leave it unfinished. If you're using cushions, make sure to measure the seat and back before purchasing them.
